Distributor is now powering its ANZ sites purely by renewable electricity

6 January, 2025Westcon-Comstor, a global technology provider and specialist distributor, today announced that it is meeting 100% of its electricity needs through renewable sources across its Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) sites.

The transition has seen Westcon-Comstor move to powering its sites in ANZ purely by renewable electricity. It comes as part of a wider company goal whereby the distributor, which operates in more than 70 countries, aims to move to 100% renewable electricity globally by 2030.

This comes at an opportune time, following the recent launch of Westcon-Comstor's Responsible Business report. The report revealed that the company derived 42% of its electricity globally from renewable sources during its latest financial year, up from 33% the previous year, as it works to reach 100% by the end of the decade.

Australia and New Zealand are the first countries in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region where the target has been achieved.

As well as transitioning to more sustainable sources of energy, the Australia warehouse in Yennora has installed solar power panels which currently reduce approximately 40% of grid energy usage. Meanwhile, in New Zealand, Westcon-Comstor is working to reduce energy consumption across its Auckland office by installing EV chargers to support the use of electric vehicles. On top of this, energy surveys were conducted across the company’s New Zealand sites to enhance energy efficiency.

By setting the 100% renewable electricity target in 2023, Westcon-Comstor aligned with the objectives of RE100, the global corporate renewable energy initiative bringing together hundreds of large and ambitious businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity.

The goal was set to complement the company’s existing emissions reduction targets, in support of its over-arching objective of achieving net zero by 2050.

Westcon-Comstor was the first major global technology distributor to have its net-zero targets formally validated by the internationally renowned Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

"Setting ambitious sustainability goals has been a key driver for our business, and it's gratifying to see significant progress in crucial markets like Australia and New Zealand," said Jason Barker, AU Supply Chain Director & APAC ESG Lead at Westcon-Comstor. "Electricity consumption is a major contributor to our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions globally, making the transition to renewable energy sources a critical step towards our goal of reducing these emissions by 50% by 2030. Additionally, minimising energy usage is essential for sustainable operations, and this remains a priority for us across the APAC region and beyond."

Following the success in ANZ, Westcon-Comstor looks forward to expanding its renewable electricity targets as well as growing its three strategic focus areas of ‘people, planet and communities’ within the region.

Detailed in the Responsible Business report, Westcon-Comstor has not only showcased strides made on sustainability and environmental protection, but also highlights a 13% year on year increase on company training budgets, with around US $1 million invested in employee development programmes globally.
